The question which is generally asked in Indian culture is ‘why we have got a life?’, ‘what to do in this life?’ and the most famous one is ‘who am I?’
If we look and observe our own life then what we find is, we are just the accumulation of our thoughts. What we think and how, is what we are. Even though some things happen without our thoughts in our life but we proceed as per our thoughts.
If we look around, we will see that everyone is miserable and is in control of his/her uncontrolled thoughts. Even though the person might not know, he is in control of his thoughts. It can be better analyzed by looking at self.
If we are conscious of our past/previous actions, and the trouble or the hindrances caused by it, then we realize with little effort that these hindrances and troubles first arise in our thoughts and then slowly become reality. For this to realize, we only need to be conscious of our already done actions. For doing this, we just have to sit and think the actions and the results of just the previous 24 hrs and also think about the thoughts that drive us to those actions.
The realization that I am in control of my thoughts does not come simply. But when it comes then the process of figuring out how my every mistake is connected to which of my thought, gets easier. But that’s not it.
By figuring this out, it’s not that I have figured out ‘why have I got this life?’ or ‘what should I do in my life?’ or ‘who am I?’ Neither have I figured out how to avoid hindrances or not become miserable or not get into trouble.
Yes, its mind. Without a controlled mind, you cannot control your thoughts.
The thought is not much different from the mind but it’s not the same too. The only connection is that the thoughts generate (I don’t know if ‘generate’ is the right word to use here) into the mind. But there are only a few thoughts over which your mind takes action. Thousands of thoughts go unnoticed by our mind or I can say, by us. These are not just hypothetical story; anyone can realize it by being conscious. ‘Conscious’, in itself, is a very big term concerning its meaning.
The word ‘control’ for the mind is wrong. Since the mind is the one that converts our few thoughts into action. We may think that it is we or I who decide to perform a specific action. But no, our mind decides for us to perform that action. And so, our mind controls us. The mind has taken over us. So, the solution would be to take over the mind and secure our righteous place to be the controller mind and hence, everything.
Now, the question that arises is ‘who are we?’ or ‘who am I?’ that will take control over the mind.
